Suggestion
1) where is County making up lost revenue from commercial restaurants and shops? 2) This is likely creating more open space for loitering/drugs and alcohol activity; homeless people. I believe the cultural respect should be at the 505 Front St area that has already been promised. Tourists don't want to come and sit in an open space hut, they want to dine/eat local fish, shop and yes, views of the ocean. What happened to the idea of a walking street with shops/restaurants on both sides with a SMA permitted distance from ocean? The sea wall walk has been part of Lahaina for over 50 years that I know of since I moved there is 1975. This is a lost revenue source for the County and a much less attractive reason for tourists to visit Maui. I beg you to re-evaluate this idea and add more commercial for locals and tourists alike.
Suggestion
Yes to all this.
Suggestion
I'm conflicted about the Makai Open Space because I have so many memories from Cheeseburger in Paradise and other shops along that side of Front Street. If the Makai Open Space is going to happen, then I think that Front St in this section needs to be pedestrian only - no cars. Restaurants on the other side of Front Street will seem more connected to the ocean if there isn't a bunch of cars driving by.
Suggestion
So remove chance of historical building return to put a small overlook or some shade? No thank you, please give us makai buildings back. You are going to harden shoreline either way....
Suggestion
Making makai side open and park like would be ideal if it’s affordable. Given risks of sea rise in the future this seems the most prudent action to take, but clearly there are many land owners who won’t be happy about their loss. So a big dilemma.
Suggestion
If you can include this Waterfront access, along with a new "Pedestrian Only" Front St in that area, you will have hit a Home Run!!
This combination of a pedestrian only, walkable commercial area, with nice shops and restaurants, along with the beauty of a waterfront access point will be the envy and highlight of West Maui!!
Suggestion
I love the idea of creating this new waterfront that is accessible by all and where locals and tourists can access the water and enjoy the beautiful coastline. Whether it is a large or small piece of land that the county ends up purchasing, it will be a nice addition to the Front St landscape
Suggestion
and a maintained public bathroom!
Suggestion
Bingo! The culture is a wonderful story and lesson to those attracted to the potential beauty of Lahaina.
Suggestion
Wailea has a gorgeous shoreline walk that is now overcrowded. People will be drawn to this. Nature is our hook. Ocean and the “Venice of the pacific”
Suggestion
Go big or go home!
Suggestion
Chicago did this in a much larger scale after a fire in the 1870s. Awesome move. People will cheer this immediately and it will draw people more than tourist trap offerings.
