Suggestion
I prefer the more permant shade plans. Awnings and Canopys fade and rip eventually. Pdesignslus I just like the looks of the more stable
designs better.
Suggestion
The shade structures don't look right. Keep the awnings and trees.
Suggestion
The shade structures don't blend well with the historic character of Front Street. Trees and awnings are much nicer
Suggestion
This building worked well and could provide employee housing on the second floor. I think this is a great idea for all of Front St.
Suggestion
Yes, a good variety as Lahaina was previously.
Suggestion
Of course, this makes sense.

Makes sense

Suggestion
All shade elements attached to buildings make sense. That reduces need for watering and tree maintenance.
Suggestion
Allow buildings to have awnings which cover the sidewalk. Front St. needs to be shaded. Shades can be withdrawn once the sunsets. This would be the owner’s responsibility, taking maintenance costs away from the County.
Suggestion
High maintenance with need fro trimming and removing fronds. Large liability with fronds. A low, low maintenance palm tree could be good.
Suggestion
Large leafy shade trees do not work. They require constant maintenance and lots of water. Birds nest in them and create lots of bird droppings Look at the shower trees on L. Honoapiilani as you leave Lahaina, they looked nice for awhile until they got totally overgrown and had to be trimmed at great expense and slowed traffic for weeks. People sitting in a restaurant want to see the ocean and the sunset, the whales jumping not big trees. Greenery should be low in height and volume and low maintenance.
Suggestion
Definitely need the large trees mixed throughout! Love the designs. Need some wider sidewalks!
Suggestion
The city and county should start working on this process.
Suggestion
Dense shade trees sound nice in theory, but they can be expensive to maintain and require a lot of water — which is already in short supply in West Maui. They also block visibility for drivers and need ongoing cleanup for falling leaves and debris. I think they make more sense on the makai side for cooling and shade, but they’re not a good fit for the mauka side.
Suggestion
The city should grant private property owners the right of usage to build balconies that overhang the city sidewalks. Not every building or tenant would do it, but it’s a great way to add more seating options , create spaces for people to enjoy the views, and provide shade , both for those on the balcony and pedestrians below. It’s a small design move that could have a big impact on comfort and street life in Lahaina.
Suggestion
More Shade Trees
More green spaces

Palms will drop palm fronds and could hurt someone.

Mahalo for all of this!
Let's start rebuilding!
Suggestion
Signage soft, not glaring or stilted in appearance
Suggestion
The shade structure pictured is not consistent with the overall look. Make the roof more Hawaiian. Likw the picnic table shade structure's in Waikule
Question
the main Maui Recovers site says this plan will take 1-2 years. Who mapped that timeline out and do they have a bridge of how to get there? Would love to see the math behind that optimistic timeline.

Suggestion
Anything that doesn't look like a bus stop shelter. Love natural trees and extended roof lines.
Suggestion
I would love this if we can get the roots deep enough they don't start lifting the sidewalks over time.
Suggestion
Concerned about maintenance/cost of taking care of wider trees vs thinner palms
Suggestion
Mores trees and any awnings should be cohesive.
Suggestion
The trees just created maintenance.
The maintenance was rarely don.
Go low maintenance or more historically accurate, no shade.
Suggestion
I think this is a great idea. Have a mix of palm trees and building "shade structures" like in this drawing. Keep that "old fishing village" look as much as possible.
Suggestion
Awesome! Authenticity is very important. Affluent tourists appreciate that.
Suggestion
More trees
Suggestion
Posts will impede foot traffic
Suggestion
Yes! Green gives back. More natural “theme” throughout Lahaina will draw better than anything else.
Suggestion
I am really hoping that there will be solid and strong apartments built to house the many WORKERS in the restaurants, hotels and businesses ... I remember that just a block or two mauka of Front street were hovels and shanty town looking housing... where many of the laborers (including native Hawaiians, COFA Micronesians, other immigrants/migrants) were expected to live... and to pay expensive rent - but those houses/apartments were probably the FIRST to ignite and be destroyed... in our (worthy) goals of caring for our LOCALS as much as re-creating a playground for visitors and the wealthy, please please please remember these people.
Suggestion
Shade elements attached to buildings. I would like to see everything back as it had been.
Suggestion
A mix of both to keep natural elements and beauty of the location but also some awnings to provide more protection from sun and light rain when it does.
