Aloha,
As Lahaina rebuilds, we have an incredible opportunity to create a more resilient and sustainable future. Water is at the heart of that vision - protecting it means protecting all people, culture and 'āina.

Our company is developing innovative systems to strengthen water security and transparency across communities. We'd love to collaborate and help ensure Lahaina's recovery includes smart, safe, and sustainable water solutions for generations to come.

Please view our short video about the other efforts on island at the Baldwin High School projects at the top of my comment.

And thank you for the opportunity to share feedback on the Lahaina recovery and rebuild efforts.

People’s lived experiences and the town’s character evolved over time. Those are memories. When the people can return, they’ll have new experiences, and the town’s character will start evolving again.

Yes, it’s a complex social issue that will take a multifaceted, long-term approach. Hawaiʻi has the highest rate of homelessness per capita, and that reality deserves real investment and compassion.

At the same time, the county shouldn’t be creating public spaces where people can remain all hours of the day and night. It isn’t safe or sustainable ; not for those living unhoused and not for the surrounding community. My point isn’t to separate homelessness from rebuilding, but to emphasize that as we design new gathering spaces, we need thoughtful planning and oversight so they remain welcoming, safe, and well cared for.

Community design should move in step with broader rebuilding efforts, social services, and housing support , so that it best contributes to Lahaina’s long-term wellbeing.
Suggestion
That’s a good start.
Suggestion
No. Personally, I prefer to gather outside of tourist areas.

The structure in the picture is the Kanaha canoe hale.
Suggestion
The character is going to be created by the people, and will develop over time.
Suggestion
On Front Street? No. Everywhere else, yes.
in reply to Mahealani's comment
Suggestion
Yes, I agree that enforcement is important. But I think the addition of raised crosswalks and curving the road will help slow cars down too. And extending Luakini will help stop people from getting dropped off on Front Street.
Suggestion
Strongly prefer pedestrian only. Cars don’t eat at cafes and shop at stores - people do! Provide ample parking spaces 1-2 blocks behind Front Street. Most visitors can walk, and have club car type golf carts to transport those who can’t. Even in Ginza, one of the best shopping areas in Tokyo, and in Paris, Amsterdam and many others, many of the main streets are pedestrian only for some or all days a week. People are thrilled to walk on the roads with no cars! And there are many more visitors on those days!
Suggestion
I would like to see both 700 and 800 blocks to be pedestrian only between 8 am and 10 pm. It will give so much flexibility for the use.
Suggestion
Make Front Street a place for multi-use pedestrian only space on 700 and 800 blocks. For example, put keiki-friendly play blocks on weekends so that they can come and play. Have Farmers and local craft market. Bring back monthly Friday night festival and adult Halloween festival.
Suggestion
Make sidewalks wide enough for cafes and benches.
Suggestion
Pedestrian only. We can open it for business delivery purposes between 10 pm and 8 am, but otherwise limit to pedestrians. Pedestrians will shop, not cars.
Suggestion
Make Front Street in meandering design so that we will slow down.
Suggestion
Open gathering space with roof cover would be great. Something like the one at Airport beach, which the condos nearby manage. It is clean, has bathrooms, BBQ facilities and electric outlet and is used by locals for birthday parties etc. We may not necessarily want to put grounded tables and benches but leave it empty so that the use will be versatile, such as practicing hula and tai chi.
Suggestion
We need to be bold to have pedestrian only Front street. For local businesses, it is pedestrians who c9me to the shops, not cars.
Suggestion
It will be good to widen sidewalks so that there are outside seatings.
Suggestion
Bike/scooter racks - yes.
Suggestion
Pavers even for the road would be awesome -- BUT ONLY if there is proper subsurface prep and a plan to maintain them and keep them level.
Suggestion
Two blocks looks good. But needs to be OK for bikes and electric scooters.
Suggestion
Yes! Especially in the locations where they were before - such as lining the wall between Baker and Papalaua St.
Suggestion
Please re-invest in coconut palms for along front street where they used to be. It was magical. please plant ones that are a minimum of 30' tall.
Suggestion
Yes to planting trees that will grow big! Also, invest in some larger trees for strategic areas to feel established quicker. 84" Boxes.
Suggestion
I think it is important to remember than people LIVE in Lahaina. I lived next to fleetwoods. Sometimes it felt like more businesses were targeting tourist foot traffic and there was much less there designed for the people who occupy this area year round. I think the residents need to be the priority when redesigning. The tourists will always come back.. that's the power of Maui... but it needs to feel like home again to people who lost everything and wish to return.
Suggestion
Yes! "Those things, that you just said, are my favorite things"...for Lahaina's future! (Nacho Libre)
Suggestion
Let's not do blacktop on Front Street. Can we do cobblestone to increase permeability and aesthetic appeal? Blacktop is hot. Let's face it...the roads before the fire were NASTY, uneven, and ugly.
Suggestion
I think the culture and history should be tangible when you walk into lahaina. I would love to see more public areas of education, improved educational signage to encourage knowledge and respect. I would love to see a true lahaina museum.. more than just the courthouse. I doubt most tourists understand the impacts for example of lahaina in the printing of newspapers which are still to this day one of the biggest cultural treasure troves of first hand accounts ofnliving in hawaii. There is so much history.... including the fire now. People should have easy access to understanding just how rich the history of the town is and I think something like a monument to the fires itself would be healing for those who lived through it and sentimental for those we lost.
Suggestion
I think low level fire protection should be required. So much research was done after the fire showing that buildings with certain roof types or with a gravel barrier around the building made them more safe to these dangers. Let's do our best to make labaina fire resistant where possible if nothing else but for the peace of mind of the people who have suffered so much
Suggestion
Have Monkeypod and Koa trees planted for grande long term shade benefits! Lahaina is HOT!
Suggestion
I fear any spaces created for locals that appear inviting will quickly be overtaken by tourists as we already see in most of the beach parks etc. How do you mandate these are areas designed for locals specifically? Otherwise they will just draw in more problems
in reply to Annelise cochran's comment
Suggestion
Adding on.. I see alot of people commenting there is no need for beach access but I will raise one counterargument. I lived on luakini street and so the closest ocean to me and where I lived was front street. I loved not needing a car to just walk down to the two available beach access points, feeling sand between my toes and watching the waves while i had a morning coffee or after a long day of work. I don't think these areas have to be planned as high traffic snorkel sites or anything but just unhindered access to ocean is actually meaningful to RESIDENTS of the town moreso than tourists who may choose to go to the more established beach parks etc for an adventurous day in the water. The shoreline is supposed to belong to us all and so even planning for slightly less building footprint on the actual shore would add a quality of life to people seeking to have some shore access in their backyard in lahaina. We don't need a cheeseburger in paradise taking precious footprint of what could otherwise be a view of wildlife or sunsets etc.
Suggestion
Love the idea of increasing ocean access but I hope this is also done with alot of thought about how increased activity in certain areas may affect nearshore marine environments. Especially considering the tourist nature of lahaina and how many people are uneducated on protecting the marine environment (ie not walking on coral, wearing cirrect sunscreen, not harassing wildlife, not feeding the fish or otherwise adding nutrients to the water, etc)
Suggestion
Yes to Native and Culturally significant trees!
Suggestion
As much history that can be brought back should be. This is still lahaina and it is precious to hawaii and the people. Landmarks should be restored and nods should be made to the history like emulating the aesthetic of the buildings, and trying to reclaim history that has already been lost like restoring wetland areas and replanting breadfruit trees. I also think the signage around town teaching of the history should be restored, updated, and expanded upon. Even as a new city lahaina should always remain a piece of hawaiian history.
Suggestion
Drinking water needs to be more accessible throughout town.
Suggestion
The one way streets next to front street often became safety hazards because people didn't realize and would drive the wrong way (for example luakini the street where i lived i would often deal with people coming at me head on the wrong way down the road when i was going home) having these one way streets pushed more traffic to front street itself. I think the roads should remain two way but perhaps focus should be put on accessibility in the streets surrounding front street so that some traffic was diverted through other parts of town rather than just the main road. I think all the roads should be widened to two lanes. Especially for moments like evacuations. My road was very dangerous to evacuate on with all the cars parked and people walking in a one lane road. It is one of the reasons I was trapped overnight in the ocean when cars began to gridlock
