Suggestion
This is not a could, this is a NEED. The future of Lahainaʻs rebuild needs to be grounded and founded around Native Hawaiian history and aesthetics.
Suggestion
let the retail and restaurants rebuild NOW. Mauka and also makai.
Suggestion
more sidewalks, such as sidewalks needed on Wainee
Suggestion
put utilities underground!
Suggestion
rebuild the retail shops now.
Moko'ula is great idea but "royal compound" seems to eliminate other prior retail areas
Suggestion
sidewalks needed on wainee for the entire length of the street
Suggestion
pedestrian only - create parking and a shuttle up by the pioneer mill stack
Suggestion
Predatory face cream businesses drove people away from front street. There has to be some way to keep them away and help local small businesses instead.
Suggestion
No aggressive predatory face cream sales. They were horrible and mean. They have no Aloha and drove people away from Front Street. The only thing they care about is scamming people. Help small family owned local businesses to get back on Front Street.
Suggestion
Keep the road open to vehicles. At the very least one way traffic with parking on at least one side of the road.
Suggestion
Keeping the road open to vehicle traffic, either one way or two, will help.
Suggestion
Keep the road open to vehicles.
Suggestion
Probably need two way, or one lane loading zone. Need Front St. vehicle access. No Front St. parking…. ENFORCED.
Suggestion
NO
Suggestion
Pavers fine. Basalt curbs BAD.
Suggestion
Need lots of trash cans with frequent pickups. Not a merchant responsibility.
Suggestion
Basalt curbs were a nightmare. Too difficult to park close too. Damaged cars constantly. People fell off the curbs.
Suggestion
Planters are trip and fall hazards. They need care and attention. You need to focus on Low maintenance and pedestrian friendly. Cars need to drive down Front St. Too many people cannot even walk a block. Remember Lahaina “Merciless Sun”.
Suggestion
Slower traffic, no Front St. parking, loading zones on Luakini St. Let’s get started. We need a commercial center.
Suggestion
Outdoor dining would be fabulous. You would have to widen the sidewalks and not allow Front St. parking. However, parking would have to be in close proximity. Use alley ways.
NÉED CLEAN PUBLIC RESTROOMS. Minimal charge ok if they are well stocked, well maintained and CLEAN.
Suggestion
No large leafy trees. They create a maintenance burden and need lots of water.
Suggestion
Nice idea. Who will compensate the owners of the properties that were built to the sidewalk. Take away Front St. parking probably makes the most sense. Or parking only on one side of Front St. If no parking only Front St. widen Luakini and have parking available. Parking will be a concern.
Suggestion
Visibility of shops and restaurants so that locals and visitors alike see the options. VISIBILITY very important.
Suggestion
Good idea. People walking do not pay attention edge variation would help to draw attention to variations in the walkways.
Suggestion
This is sort of what there was with the loading zones. This creates unsafe sidewalks and liability for the County.
Suggestion
We have been told pedestrian malls don’t work. This should not be an option for any part of Front St.
Suggestion
Wide pedestrian only front street.
Lots of free parking close by.
Allow businesses to rebuild on old footprint.
Suggestion
This looks GREAT! Let's DO IT yesterday!
Suggestion
Yes!
Suggestion
YES!
Suggestion
Don't change anything, please. It was fine the way it was.
Suggestion
I think this sounds best. Limit the overall traffic, but still allow it which will allow for more parking and wider sidewalks. It was always SO fun to drive through when you didn't have time to walk it!
Suggestion
YES!
Question
Would property owners have to give the city some of their land for the road widening? If so, how would the city compensate them? Also, since property owners are being allowed to rebuild their previously legal nonconforming structures and other buildings exactly as they were before the fire with fewer permitting requirements and a faster timeline, how will any necessary changes to building plans be managed to ensure they still benefit from the streamlined process if their lot size is reduced?
in reply to Ashley Sliter's comment
Suggestion
The federal government gave Maui county $400,000,000 for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, and $213,832,000 for Fire Mitigation as part of the Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery. Hopefully, they will put these funds to effective use rebuilding infrastructure and improving fire safety to better protect our community moving forward.
Suggestion
To truly support local businesses, the city and county need clearer rules, regulations, and procedures for rebuilding. I understand it’s a slow process to define these, but the faster we can finalize them, the sooner rebuilding can begin. The quicker we rebuild, the faster local businesses can reopen and people can get back to work.
Suggestion
Making Front Street pedestrian-only might sound appealing, but it would hurt retail by limiting access not just for customers, but also for business owners, staff, and delivery vehicles. Limiting vehicle access reduces the visibility and convenience that businesses rely on to attract both spontaneous drive-in customers and everyday foot traffic. Our greatest need isn’t an innovative “solution” we could debate all day; solutions that often cause as many problems as they solve. What we need is to get things moving. In the past, most tourists walked Front Street yet they were not the only people there and vehicle access still played a key role in keeping businesses running. Right now, no one is walking or driving; let’s reopen it as it was so the street can come back to life.
Question
I'm thinking of what we could do quickly. How about displays of artifacts. I know they burned. But the preservation society has stuff. They could protect them in cases and we could look at them as we walk long the waterfront. Many of the larger airports have art displays-- my god, look at OGG. Whom could we ask? The restoration society? We donate to them but I can't live long enough to see the buildings they want. Could someone ask them to consider?
Suggestion
Please. No Trex type simulated look. Wood will weather and rot, just like all of us. The old railing along Front street, how old was that? If it totally disintegrates, replace it. Someone posted that the wine barrel trash bins were ugly, but compared to what? Plastic trash barrels? I am physically disabled but was able to walk the boardwalk in front of Kimo's.
Question
I tried to find pictures of the main street of Jacksonville, Or.

They have tasteful murals and brass plaques that give the history of the town as it applies to that particular location, a walking musem. We could have such murals, etc. until the structures are rebuilt, which will take a long time. This would attract visitors Earlier than waitng for the whole to be done.
Question
I would like someone to query towns where streets are pedestrian only. Would love pedestrian only but not at the expense of reduced trade for shop owners. Also like Victoria's comment on a trolly like Kaanapali trolly, a drop on/off; electric vehicles for sound reduction. Large parking areas on either end of the Front Street.
Suggestion
Cars should be allowed but traffic limited. a one way street would accommodate NEVs, neighborhood electric vehicles. Allows the physically handicapped to view the shops, etc.
Suggestion
Of the three, I like this one best. Slow if we have to have vehicles. One way only, but extend all the way to that big parking lot by Kam III.
Suggestion
This would be awesome!
Suggestion
Yes!
Suggestion
I am pro trees. Lots of trees.
Suggestion
Yes. Shade with benches, not just under the Banyan Tree would be a welcome addition.
Suggestion
I think it looks ugly.
Suggestion
No cars.
Suggestion
Yes, as much as possible!
